How to Estimate a Painting Project
At Rangers Painting and Drywall, ware licensed painters and color consultants with a great deal of expertise in accurately estimating residential and commercial painting projects. If painting is an art, then estimating is an art on its own as well! We’ve been estimating projects for years, building the skills to consistently and accurately estimate projects, which makes the entire process of delivering an outstanding result to our customers run smooth and easy.

Can you get a lower bid on pretty much any project if you call another painting or drywall contractor out to give you an estimate? Of course you can! Does that mean you will still get the same high-quality result you expect? Not necessarily. In addition, may contractors who underbid at the outset will come back to you over and over again seeking a larger budget, or just deliver a poor quality result that you will not be happy with.
To give you an idea of how our estimating system works, we break every piece of the project down to the smallest components to ensure that all of our expenses are accounted for in our own books.
Trust me, even for professionals like us, if we walk into a large open space and are asked to estimate a price for ceilings, walls, trims doors, and everything else, it can be overwhelming to say the least. Nevertheless, we are constantly asked to give “ballpark” estimates not just on larger open spaces in residences and commercial spaces, but for entire homes and office buildings. The trouble here is that anytime we give a “ballpark” estimate, the customer almost always will not budge from that number, either believing that we are attempting to rip them off if they believe the number is too high, or they try to hold us to that number if we complete an in-depth estimate and it comes out higher.
There are a great many variables that we must consider in the bid and estimating process. For example, let’s say everything in a room were to be painted the exact same color, with the same paint. In that case, it’s going to take a lot less time and resources to complete the project than it would if the ceiling, walls, and mouldings were all different paints and paint colors. The amount of time and effort required in cutting between colors is significant compared to a space that is painted all the same color and paint. Most of the time, we are asked to provide an estimate before any color or paint finishes have been determined.

In terms of estimating a project by square foot, this can be very complicated because measuring the areas that need to be painted and doing the math to come up with the estimate number is time consuming and the math can be insane for most people to process.
The type of room to be painted also has a huge impact on an estimate. A large family room in an open floor design with one color and paint type requires much less effort than painting the bathrooms where walls are likely to be different colors than the ceiling and the intimacy of the space requires a great deal more brushwork. Doors and trim are other considerations and all of this affects the amount of work we are able to complete within a certain time-frame and therefore affects the final price we will quote.
These are just some initial considerations to take into account when you are out looking for estimates and bids. At Rangers Painting and Drywall, we work with you to get the right information so we can give you an accurate bid that we can stand behind. Working off of “ballpark” estimates does not serve the customer or the health of our company.
We are here for you and ready to work with you to make your painting projects a reality!

How can I clean my walls to keep them looking new?
Maintenance and proper cleaning of newly painted walls is essential to keeping them looking new. To do this, you must identify what type of paint was used. The type of paint used is important because that will dictate what kind of cleaning solutions are appropriate for your particular situation. The first thing that should be done prior to any attempt to clean a wall is to dust the walls themselves. Even though it is difficult to see the amount of dust that accumulates on wall surfaces that we see every day, dust and other airborne particles constantly settle on the surface of walls.
After dusting the walls, then you may apply the appropriate cleaning solution. For example, walls painted with semi-gloss paint are generally the most durable and can usually be scrubbed without damaging the paint surface. In contrast, if you walls are stained or have flat finishes, they will need to be cared for much more delicately. If you are unsure about the proper care and maintenance of your walls, please give us a call to check with a professional.
